Looking to get a new ID card printer? If so, here are some features that you’ll need to take into consideration.

Table of Contents

  • Print Quality
  • Print Speed
  • Encoding abilities
  • Software
  • Card Capacity
  • Choosing the right ID card printer for you

Print Quality

It’s important to consider the print quality of your ID card printer as you want to make sure that you’re producing high-quality cards with crisp images and clear text. This is especially pertinent if your ID cards contain high-quality imagery or if your ID cards have a larger number of text on them than usual.

Print Speed

If print speed is important to you as you need to print numerous cards in an hour, you will want to consider getting a printer that has the capability to do so for you. While some printers can print about 160 coloured cards an hour, some can print up to 720 coloured cards an hour. Of course, you’ll also need to consider whether or not you’re printing single or double-sided cards.

Encoding abilities

Some ID cards are encoded – meaning that they carry unique information such as personal data, certain security clearance access, financial records and more. This feature can be done through a magnetic strip or a smartcard strip – depending on the type of ID card that you have.

Software

Printers also come with different software features depending on what you’re looking for. While some printers come with software that allows you to design cards with ease, other printers come with technology which prints security watermarks across the card surface – ensuring that the card is authentic. Some printers even come with spot-colour matching features to make sure that the colour of your ID card is correct.

Card Capacity

If you’re printing large batches of cards, there’s nothing more frustrating than having to load and unload cards because your printer doesn’t have enough capacity. If that’s a problem that you already face, you’ll want to take this into consideration when choosing your next ID card printer.

While some ID card printers have the capacity for 100 cards at a time, some have 70 while others have 200. Take the time to figure out what card capacity you require – after all, time is money and you’ll want to make sure that you’re printing cards efficiently.

Choosing the right ID card printer for you

As seen from the above, there are quite a few ID card features to take into consideration when it comes to choosing the right ID card printer. If you require double-sided printing, some ID card printers would suit your needs better than others. On the other hand, if you’re only looking for a small volume of single-sided cards, then a smaller ID card printer would work just fine.

Whichever ID card printer you choose to go for, it’s important that it not only comes with features that you’re looking for but also accommodates your needs with ease – after all, an ID card printer is meant to make your work easier, not harder!
